Members of a family of 14 genera and about 55 species of tropical birds with a distinguishing bony casque, or helmet, surmounting their prominent bill, which is supported by powerful neck muscles and fused vertebrae. The large bill assists in fighting, preening, constructing nests, and catching prey.
