Details

Photographic process that is a variant of the oil process in which the developed silver in a gelatin print is used as a catalyst to tan the gelatin. The untanned highlights become saturated when the print is soaked in water and will resist a greasy ink, while the tanned shadows accept the ink. The original print may be the end product or may be used as a master for transferring the image to another support.
