In Front of a Painting by Mr. Manet !T!—Why the devil is this fat, red-faced woman in her nightdress !T!called Olympia? !T!—But my dear, perhaps that’s the name of the black cat? !T!Published June 19, 1865, in Le Charivari
When Édouard Manet exhibited his painting Olympia at the Salon of 1865, it caused a tremendous scandal. The painting depicts a nude courtesan reposing on a divan, accompanied by a maid and a spry black cat. Critics denounced the painting as immoral, but Daumier's onlookers seem more befuddled than offended.
