Throughout his long career, Raphael Soyer turned to the female model as a favorite trope of artistic life. By studying and rendering the human form, Soyer felt he was joining in the brotherhood of artists, reaching back to the Old Masters and up through his own time. In this way, the artist-model continuum speaks of the rich heritage of artistic practice. Although Soyer may have been searching for that timeless connection, he never idealized or generalized his models; rather, he represented the specific women who posed for him.
