Description

Ralph Blakelock's landscape style was highly individual. A loner and a romantic, he based his vision on personal experience, subjective impressions and his own imagination. An extended trip in the West from 1869 to 1872 provided him with images for the rest of his artistic career.

Cheyenne Encampment is one of the few surviving works painted shortly after his return. Though more naturalistic than his later works, light emanates from the core of the composition and casts a golden glow, a hallmark of his later, more romantic style. Blakelock composed his works from actual scenes, but used light and shadow to lend them a poetic sensibility.
