Matsumoto Kôshirô (1910-1982), born into a famous family of kabuki actors, performed under that stage name from Setpember 1949 until October 1981. One of the great masters of male action roles in the 20th century, he was recognized by the Japanese government as a “Living National Treasure” for preserving and maintaining a classical art form. He is portrayed here in the role of Matsuômaru in a Kuruma-biki scene.
