Ichikawa Jukai III (1886-1971) held that stage name from February 1949 through his retirement in March 1958. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was actively involved in the performance and promotion of new plays. In 1954, when this print was published, Jukai was 68 years old and specializing in "old man roles," so the image refers not to a contemporary play but a famous role in the actor's career.
