Description

Like many young men of his generation, Hans Grohs enlisted enthusiastically, eager to serve Germany when war was declared. He encountered no action in battle, as kidney stones earned him an early discharge, but he saw enough of war to radically change his perspective. In 1917 he began his first of three series of prints in the form of a Dance of Death. Throughout the three series, Death is a vigorous, triumphant figure who harvests soldiers and civilians alike. This sheet comes from the final series, which deals with the harsh realities and politics of life in post-war Germany.
