Painter and printmaker Clark Hobart was celebrated for his monotypes, which he showed to great acclaim at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. In this moody scene, a nymph pauses in an idyllic landscape, evoking a pure, unadulterated life in nature, a goal that many settlers and artists sought in early twentieth-century California.
