Born in Missouri, William Samuel Parrott moved to Portland as a child. He opened his first studio in 1867 where he remained an active artist until 1887 when he began traveling throughout Oregon, Washington, and California. Parrott returned to the Northwest in 1911, settling in Goldendale, Washington. Mountain landscapes were his most popular subject, particularly views of Mount Hood. He painted a number of variations on this theme from different viewpoints and at varying times of day in the fashionable style made popular by the Hudson River School and explorer artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill.
