Description

Hansen-Bahia's peripatetic career took him from his native Germany to Brazil, and then to Ethiopia, where he lived for three years while awaiting Brazilian citizenship. His style and technique, however, remain rooted in the long German tradition of woodcut. In this example, the vertical press used to print woodblocks is pictured; a figure of a nude woman—muse, model, or, perhaps, personification of the press—is intertwined with the gears and levers of the machine.

This sheet is dedicated to Jacob Kainen (1909-2001), a painter, printmaker, and Curator of Prints at the Smithsonian Institution.
