Roy DeCarava, best known for his stark images of African American life in Harlem during the mid-twentieth century, created a series of photographs documenting musicians and jazz culture during the 1950s and 1960s. Not content to capture dynamic artists in static poses, DeCarava instead sought to express the mood of jazz through nontraditional portraits. This gestural photograph of renowned tenor saxophone players John Coltrane and Ben Webster, likely taken while the men were on tour together in 1960, demonstrates the close musical and personal relationship they shared.
