An employee of Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan, Harry Callahan learned photography after joining the company’s camera club. In 1941, inspired by a lecture given by Ansel Adams, he took up photography full time. Callahan’s primary subject was his wife, Eleanor, whom he photographed for more than fifty years. Eleanor said in 1996 of these exceptional images, “Photography was as much a part of our lives as getting up in the morning. I wasn't worried about the pictures. I never had any thought that they would be anything but nice.” Eleanor Callahan passed away earlier this year at the age of ninety-five.
