Though trained as a painter and lithographer, Édouard-Denis Baldus became a sought-after architectural photographer in France during the later nineteenth century. He was hired by the French Historic Monuments Commission in 1851 to work on the Missions Héliographiques project, producing photographs of buildings, bridges, and other structures slated for demolition during the modernization of Paris. Later he photographed the construction of the Louvre Museum, and produced the popular Vues de Paris en Photographie, an album featuring exceptional architectural sites.
