Description

One of the eight photographers included in New Topographics, Lewis Baltz was interested in the concept of "landscape as real estate" during the 1970s and 1980s. Though his compositions appear unaffected, he challenged the idea of a purely neutral image: "The ideal photographic document would appear to be without author or art. Yet of course photographs, despite their verisimilitude, are abstractions; their information is selective and incomplete." Baltz worked extensively in Park City, Utah, during the late 1970s, as the popular ski resort underwent a phase of rapid expansion. He charted the swift construction of homes and vacation condominiums for two years, capturing the former mining town as it shifted radically in appearance and purpose.
