Description

This print is one of many by Sekino to have come to the Museum as a gift from Gordon Gilkey, the long-time Curator of Graphic Arts. When Gilkey was on the faculty of the Art Department at Oregon State University, he invited Sekino to teach as a visiting artist. The two men developed a close friendship. A handwritten note by Gilkey on the mat for this print identifies the subject as "Oregon Cascade Range," and that it how it was published in the 2011 exhibition catalogue, _The Artist’s Print, The Craftsman's Hand: Three Centuries of Japanese Prints from the Portland Art Museum_. However, subsequent research has shown that this print is actually a view of Kayano Plateau, which lies at the foot of Hakkoda mountains, some 10 miles southeast of Aomori city in northern Japan. Sekino had grown up in Aomori prefecture, so we may imagine that this was a familiar and beloved place for him.
