A Kyoto potter, Kobayashi Hideo is among the many ceramists of his generation who have broken away from traditional forms. Although this work by Kobayashi could hold flowers, it works equally well as an abstract sculpture. Kobayashi is well known for his special technique of twisting and pinching ropes of clay to produce an uneven surface. The white parts are painted with white enamel, while the sheen on the unglazed black surface is an effect of carbon in the kiln atmosphere.
