Bio

Andrea Bowers is an internationally acclaimed artist based in Los Angeles, CA. As an artist-activist, the images, symbols, and slogans of the movements in which she participates form the basis of her drawings, installations, photographs, and sculpture. In many ways, her project seeks to connect the contemporary struggles of women and oppressed groups with universal appeals for freedom, peace, and human advancement. Bowers earned her MFA from CalArts in 1992. Since then, she has been the focus of solo exhibitions at a variety of institutions from the Hammer Museum UCLA to the Tate Modern and Reina Sofia, Madrid and her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Tate Modern; Whitney Museum of American Art and many others.
