Odilon Redon was a master of manipulating shades of black to create mysterious, dreamlike works. Here he rendered the figure of Death, emerging upon a powerful horse, in subtle shades of gray. Such an image, of Death riding a horse, has a long artistic history and is linked to the story of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as referenced in the biblical Book of Revelation.
