The Drawn Line

2007

The Drawn Line features some 65 European and American drawings selected from the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum. The objects are organized according to three themes that have long been favorites of artists—the figure, the portrait, and the landscape. Ranging from the 18th century to the present, these works present a great variety of approaches to these subjects. From spontaneous sketches to highly finished sheets, these drawings also afford the viewer a chance to study the myriad ways in which such drawing media as watercolor, wash, gouache, crayon, chalk, charcoal, and graphite can be handled.
