Description

Originally from Portland, Oregon, Imogen Cunningham began making photographs in 1901 at the age of 18. After studying at the University of Washington in Seattle, she worked in Edward Curtis’ photography studio for two years. This early photograph, created in her own Seattle studio, is a simple yet striking self-portrait that demonstrates her evolving Pictorialist style. While the 1920s saw Cunningham forgo Pictorialism’s soft focus and painterly effects in favor of visual precision, her first Seattle photographs demonstrate a sensitivity and awareness of form and light that characterize the images she produced throughout her long career.
