Bio

Morita Chikuami was a member of a respected family of artisans who specialized in working with bamboo. The shop founded by his grandfather in 1819 still stands on a busy street in Kyoto.

Chikuami was part of a generation that transformed bamboo weaving from craft into art. Although he never deviated from the tradition of making functional objects, his innovative techniques and use of materials won recognition at national competitive exhibitions and among foreign collectors.
