Description

When Japan opened its borders to foreign trade in 1854 following two centuries of isolation, tourism became a thriving industry. Visitors from the United States and Europe typically arrived in the bustling port city of Yokohama, where Felice Beato opened a photography studio in 1863. Tourists purchased his albums of photographs as souvenirs and carried them back to the West, where they enlightened armchair tourists who could not make the journey themselves. The area featured in this photograph is known as the Bluff—a section of Yokohama that Westernized rapidly to satisfy the needs of tourists and expatriates.
