Description

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner volunteered for military service but soon suffered a mental collapse and spent the remainder of the war years in a sanitarium in Switzerland. During his short service in the war, Kirchner learned to ride and care for horses, as seen in this small image. The nervous energy of the drawn line suggests the artist's heightened anxiety at the time he made the sketch.
