Description

Defying trends in contemporary art, Philip Pearlstein has made the traditional studio nude a cornerstone of his artistic practice. Yet by cutting off the upper part of the models' faces, he breaks with longstanding tropes of nude painting and portraiture and eliminates the possibility for the viewer to return the gaze of the model. Thus stripped of the typical interaction and identity, the bodies become pure form—elements of the studio, just like the props, stacked canvases, and tools.
