Senrin, originally from Niigata prefecture, studied painting under the Nihonga artists Tomioka Eisen (1864-1905) and Hashimoto Gahô (1835-1908); in 1907, he graduated from the Tokyo Art School extension course in Japanese painting. He traveled to India for several months in 1917 and 1918 to view and sketch ancient Buddhist monuments. Returning to Japan, he lived in Chiba prefecture and made his living painting Buddhist icons.
