Bairei was a Kyoto artist of the late nineteenth century whose colorful depictions of nature helped to revive interest in the kachôga (bird-and-flower painting) genre. His paintings and prints are an attractive blend of the naturalism of the Maruyama-Shijô school and a poetic sensibility and flair for interesting compositions. Bairei was a key figure in Kyoto art of the Meiji period: by infusing the classical styles of the late Edo period with a fresh sensibility, he prepared the way for a transition to a more modern age. All of the leading Kyoto artists of the early twentieth century, including Takeuchi Seihô, were his pupils.
