As a young artist in the city of Nagoya, Yamamoto Baiitsu won the patronage of a wealthy collector of Chinese paintings. At a time when most Japanese artists who were looking to China for inspiration had access only to books, Baiitsu was in an especially privileged situation. His direct knowledge of Ming- and Qing-dynasty painting is evident in this charming landscape, with its relaxed brushwork, the variety of tones of ink, and the use of both wet and dry brushes. The motif of an empty hut by a body of water is an homage to Ni Zan, the great Chinese literati painter of the fourteenth century.
