Yoshida Hiroshi infused traditional woodblock printing with a new sense of light and air derived from his training in Impressionist-style painting. Yoshida’s gold-tinged palette is perfectly attuned to the tranquil atmosphere of daybreak in a rural harbor town. The drama of Hokusai’s and Hiroshige’s turbulent waters is absent in the mirror-like surface of Yoshida’s sea, which reflects the turquoise sky of a warm summer’s day. A sense of anticipation lingers over the scene, however, in the figures of the fishermen, who patiently wait to set sail at the turn of the tide.
