Sanctuary portrays a great flood that occurred near Lawrence, Kansas, in 1926. As the rain pelts down, horses, cows, pigs, and a family of skunks flock to a small morsel of land to escape the rising water. The present state of the animals alludes to their ultimate demise: a pig lies on his back out of exhaustion, while the horse at center has a malnourished, skeletal frame.
