During the 1840s, Ziem traveled widely throughout Europe and in the 1850s, he went to North Africa and Tunisia. He was a prolific painter, best known for his landscapes and views of Venice and Constantinople. He was the first living artist to have works accepted into the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Like many of his contemporaries, Ziem was interested in capturing the fleeting effects of light in different settings and atmospheres. Though he wanted to recreate in detail the landscapes he saw on his travels, he also hoped to transform everyday reality through light, imbuing it with a poetic or dreamlike quality.
