Description

Leg and Chair is part of a series of prints Jasper Johns made in 1971, related to his seminal painting "According to What" (1964). Painted just after his first retrospective exhibition, it gathers disparate and previously used motifs and techniques, and can be seen as the summary of his artistic development. He refers to the painting in his "Sketchbook Notes" (published in 1965), "The watchman falls 'into' the trap of looking." The upside down figure, then, becomes the viewer or critic. This reflects Johns's ongoing interest in provoking the spectator to note illusion, transformation, and habits of viewing.
