In 1717, Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) painted a half-length portrait of Peter the Great of Russia posed in this manner with a battlefield in the background. It soon became a convention for princely portraiture of the eighteenth century. Here it is repeated by Tocqué, son-in-law of Nattier, in an unusual horizontal format, which suggests it may have been intended to hang over a doorway as part of a suite of paintings for a salon.
