Description

As with many paintings from the Renaissance, the centuries have not been kind to this panel. Heavy overpainting had covered losses and earlier damage to the paint’s surface. In 2005-2006, the Kress Program of Paintings Conservation, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, treated it, clearing away earlier restorations. First, the panel was stabilized and the old overpainting was removed. Then, through judicious inpainting of areas where the original paint had been lost, the delicacy and integrity were returned to this devotional painting from the School of Treviso.
