Celebrating Prints: Recent Acquisitions

2008

The Portland Art Museum founded its Department of Prints and Drawings in 1978 with the appointment of its first curator, Gordon Gilkey. To mark the department's 30th anniversary, this exhibition features approximately 65 prints acquired during the last five years that have deepened the collection. Celebrating Prints spans from the late 15th to the early 21st centuries with works by more than 50 artists, chiefly American and European, including Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, James McNeill Whistler, Sol LeWitt, and Kara Walker.

Thematic categories often provide a particularly revealing lens through which to make comparisons between different artistic treatments of given subjects, across time and in the same period. Over the past five years several thematic threads have emerged as objects have entered the collection of works on paper. This exhibition broadly highlights seven: the fantastic, narrative, identity, the natural world, the built environment, animals, and abstraction. Seeking to illuminate the "call and response" between one work and another, this exhibition reveals myriad approaches to these topics, from representational to abstract in style, from traditional to cutting edge use of media.
