Bio

Sugano studied art at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts, specializing in Nihonga painting. He learned woodblock printing from Sekino Jun'ichirô and first exhibited his work in the 1955 Japanese Print Association exhibition, becoming a member the following year. In later years, Sugano worked in a number of intaglio processes, seeking to vary the linear and tonal qualities of his prints. He retired to the seaside town of Chigasaki, on the coast of Sagami Bay just west of Fujisawa. The Chigasaki City Museum hosted a retrospective of his work in 2009.
