Pablo Picasso painted his first dove when he was learning to paint from his father, José Ruiz y Blasco. But the dove also held political significance for the artist. This image refers to Picasso's joining of the Communist Party and involvement with the World Peace Congresses, following the Second World War. La Columbe (Dove) became the symbol of the Congresses and was used for the poster of the 1949 Paris meeting.
