Jacques Lipchitz used the Minotaur, the monstrous offspring of a woman and a bull, to evoke the struggle of humans over their beastly nature. Those familiar with the tale will recall that the Minotaur was fed seven sacrificial youths and seven maidens, a reference (though not depicted in this rendering) to the sacrifice of the young to the insatiable Second World War engulfing Europe at the time.
