Wesley Wehr earned a master's degree in musical composition from the University of Washington in 1953. There he became friendly with, and taught music to, Mark Tobey, who in turn introduced Wehr to his artistic circle. Tobey offered encouragement when Wehr began sketching, and in the 1960s Wehr began painting his signature landscapes-in-miniature, no bigger than the palm of your hand. He painted in between pursuing other passions; he wrote poetry and held a research curatorship in paleontology at the University of Washington's Burke Museum. He is the author of a recent collection of essays: The Eighth Lively Art: Conversations with Painters, Poets, Musicians, and the Wicked Witch of the West.
