- Bio
Chinzan was the last of five children born to Tsubaki Sadashige, a high-ranking direct retainer of the Tokugawa house as head of the Spear Corps. Chinzan prepared for his hereditary career in the corps by training in horseback riding and use of the spear and sword. He took up painting to augment his meager income, and quickly won a reputation as Watanabe Kazan’s his most diligent pupil. His success as a painter of portraits, flowering plants, and landscapes allowed him to eventually retire from military service.
