This portfolio of 12 prints, titled Nihon minzoku zufu (Native Customs of Japan, Illustrated) was created by members of the Nihon Hanga Kai (Japan Print Artists Society) in 1946. The prints are modestly sized and on rough paper, reflecting ongoing economic hardships in the years after the Japanese defeat in World War II. The series is exceptional in departing from traditional subjects; several of the participating artists chose to depict customs of their native towns, introducing little-known rural customs to their audience. The portfolio was published by the Fugaku Publishers, with the Takamizawa Studio doing the printing.
