The pleasure of traveling on the open road is encapsulated in the happy grin of the solitary figure at the center of this scene. Lowering his fan and looking out from under his straw hat, he regards the scene around him with pure delight. Two men perch on benches to the left, hungrily eating the snacks provided by post station vendors. Futagawa was over 170 miles from the start of the Tōkaidō in Edo, and some travelers have begun to show signs of stiff limbs and frayed nerves upon their arrival at the station. Standing tall in the middle of the road, two old trees look on, unmoved by the human drama playing out below.
