Description

Newman's paintings often seem stylistically more European than American. They are usually compared to mid-19th century French and German imagery such as the naturalistic yet idealized landscapes of the Barbizon school or the dramatic, moody paintings of the Romantics. This painting's dark, atmospheric setting, shot through with flashes of bright color and loose brush strokes is strongly reminiscent of the later works of romantic painter Eugène Delacroix.

Robert Loftin Newman trained in Paris with Thomas Couture, an influential teacher and painter of large narrative works based on classical or historical themes. Newman is known primarily for small painted works based on well-known religious or literary themes, such as Christ and Peter on the Sea of Galilee.
