Some of the earliest analog photographic processes, such as daguerreotypes and wet-collodion glass plate negatives, rendered exquisitely detailed pictures. Similarly, digital technologies celebrate fine detail. Layman uses digital processes to capture his subjects at striking scale, making even the most mundane objects monumental. Many of Layman's photographs feature vessels such as sinks, ovens, ice cube trays, and medicine cabinets. Here, the artist captures the bottom of a plastic container that once held strawberries. The detailed image combines aspects of hundreds of individual digital photographs taken with a 4 x 5-inch camera outfitted with a digital scanner. Collaging together the many images via computer, Layman creates an elevated, abstract portrait of this humble vessel marked by imprints, handling scratches, and bright strawberry juice.
