The livre d'artiste is a time-based art form in that the viewer must leaf through the pages, never seeing the entire book at once.
This temporal quality is elegantly evoked in both the poems and etchings of Archaeologies of Loss, which deals with memory, deterioration, and the passing of time. Sarah Horowitz explains that her plant images, "elicit ephemerality—their growth, decay, and dispersal of seed, eventually disintegrating to leave only the fibrous skeleton. I hope to capture a lightness, a sense of space, in spite of the ever-present fragility and mortality reflected in my memories of desert winter landscapes—golden sun-bleached, charcoal woody stems and white snow."
