Important under the Norman dukes of the 10th and 11th centuries; captured by the English in 1346 and 1417-1450; prosperity was broken by revocation of Edict of Nantes in 1685 and city became Protestant; center for Girondist movement during Revolution; largely destroyed in World War II.
