Description
Main island originally inhabited by Malayo-Polynesians. The island was settled by the Chinese in the 7th century. Later visited by Portuguese in the 16th century. Migrations occurred in the 17th century from inhabitants of the Chinese Fujian and Guangdong provinces. The Dutch arrived in the 17th century as well. Taiwan became a refuge for Chinese Nationalists in the late 1940s. The official language is Mandarin Chinese.
