Was ancient town on coast W of Neapolis (Naples); oldest Greek colony in Italy, founded ca. 750 BC; was believed to have been the seat of the Cumaean Sibyl; came under supremacy of Rome in 338 BC; destroyed by Neapolitans in 1205 AD.
