Like the other photographers included in the New Topographics exhibition, Joe Deal surveyed the changing nature of his surroundings with his camera, standing at a distance from his subjects in order to create a consistent viewpoint and to minimize what he termed the "personal intrusion" of the photographer. He frequently eliminated the sky or horizon line in his photographs, creating a "self-contained, undifferentiated space" that calls into question scale and perspective.
