Maki Haku’s dramatic contrast of paper white and deep blue pigment makes for a powerful portrait of Mount Fuji. The artist has set aside the rich textural effects for which his prints are known in favor of a purely visual experience of the mountain. Unlike the ceramics and fruits Maki was exploring in his still-life works at the time, Fuji cannot be grasped in the hand or fully comprehended by human perception. Almost abstract in its simplicity, Maki’s Fuji conveys the profoundly mysterious nature of this Japanese icon.
